Why protect the core first?
The body defends its core temperature above all else. When the core cools, circulation to hands, feet, and skin is reduced to conserve heat, so cold fingers are often a core problem before they are a hand problem. Keeping the torso warm relaxes that response, which is why a warm core commonly translates into warmer extremities, and why thermal systems for the body start at the trunk.

Match the tool to the mechanism. Reflective layers counter radiant loss. Windproof shells counter convection. Insulating pads and soles counter conduction. Dry, breathable layers manage evaporation.
